Pokemon Pocket's Mythical Island expansion brings lots of new and exciting cards to the digital Pokemon card game. The Mythical Island expansion shakes up the meta, bringing new decks into the mix, while also giving older archetype room to improve their lists.
With every expansion, there are cards more popular and stronger than the rest of the release. These cards usually have an impact on the meta and will see a lot of play among players. You want to keep an eye out for those cards to start building your meta decks or if you're unlucky, like me, you'll save up Pack Points to get your hands on them later.
In this article, I'll cover my top 12 cards from the Mythical Island expansion that you want to find!
12- Sigilyph
Mostly tied to Psychic type decks, a1a-33-sigilyph is great to have early in the game and get a draw from its Spike Draw attack, helping you find the cards you need to get your game plan going. It's a good addition to have early in the game to tank attacks as you work on getting your win condition online.
It's a better version of a1-196-meowth, having an extra 20 health, making it more of a challenge for opponents to knock out.
11- Chatot
A new colorless Pokemon that can fit in all sorts of decks, perfect if you want something to play in the early game and get draws. Mimic only needs 1 Colorless Energy to activate, shuffling your deck in the deck and drawing you a card for each card in the opponent's hand. This is perfect to activate after you've played all the cards possible in your hand and get extra cards, helping you find the cards you need for your strategy.
Having 1 retreat cost means you can easily move a1a-62-chatot to the bench to prevent opponent from getting the knockout.
10- Aerodactyl ex
You need an a1a-63-old-amber to get a1a-46-aerodactyl-ex in play, so it can be a bit inconsistent since you're not guaranteed to draw it in your starting hand and promo-5-poke-ball can't draw it. However, managing to get a1a-46-aerodactyl-ex on the board early in the game can ruin opponents game plan entirely, especially if they're trying to get a Stage 2 Pokemon in play.
a1a-46-aerodactyl-ex's Primeval Law prevents opponent from playing a Pokemon from their hand to evolve their Active Pokemon, slowing them down and forcing them to have that Pokemon on the Bench. This will force them to commit resources to put their Active Pokemon on the Bench, evolve it, and then move it back to the Active spot, extra steps they won't be fond of doing.
A 140-health Pokemon isn't too shabby, but still, not the best since it can get one-shot by the likes of a1-129-mewtwoex.
9- Scolipede
New Poison synergy! a1a-55-scolipede works great with a1-177-weezing's Gas Leak, gaining 50 more damage on its Venoshock attack when targeting a Poisoned Pokemon, dealing 120 damage.
It's a great Stage 2 Pokemon that gives 1 Match point and can be a menace in a no Ex meta. We've seen a1-165-arbok a1-177-weezing becoming a popular deck in tournaments, and a1a-55-scolipede can potentially have similar success.
8- Mythical Slab
a1a-65-mythical-slab is great in decks with many Psychic-type Pokemon, increasing the chances you find a Psychic Pokemon at the top of your deck. The reason you'd run a1a-65-mythical-slab in your list is to thin out your deck, increasing the odds of finding your evolution line if you're playing a Stage 2 Pokemon.
Even when you don't find a Psychic Pokemon, you'll place the card you got at the bottom of your deck, increasing the chances that your next draw is the card you want.
a1a-65-mythical-slab is already being included in the popular a1-129-mewtwoex a1-132-gardevoir deck.
7- Marshadow
a1a-47-marshadow is one of my new favorite Fighting-type Pokemon who doesn't let their fellow ally die in vain. a1a-47-marshadow's revenge attack deals 40 damage, but if any of your Pokemon were knocked out during the opponent's last turn, a1a-47-marshadow gains an extra 60 damage on its attack, dealing 100 damage with one blow.
It's a great source of alternative damage to add to the list, and if a1a-47-marshadow gets knocked out, you're only giving 1 Match Point to the opponent. He plays perfectly when a non ex Pokemon of yours is just knocked out, and after a1a-47-marshadow is out of the game, your Ex Pokemon can carry the late-game.
6- Eevee
I'm not the biggest fan of hugely relying on my luck, but I can't look away from how broken the new a1a-61-eevee can be in the hands of those blessed by luck.
a1a-61-eevee's continuous steps attack flips a coin until you get tails (sounds like a1-220-misty), and for each heads you get, continuous steps deals 20 damage. The sky is the limit, no Pokemon is 100% safe from a1a-61-eevee's attacks, and one stroke of luck can change the game completely in your favor.
a1a-61-eevee is a unique Pokemon, capable of evolving to different Pokemon types. We still don't have all of a1a-61-eevee evolutions in Pokemon Pocket, but you can evolve it into a1-45-flareon or a1a-19-vaporeon. We'll likely get more evolutions in future expansions, which could further improve a1a-61-eevee in the lists you add.
5- Vaporeon
a1a-19-vaporeon can be crazy good in Water decks, moving Energy around with its Wash Out ability. We already have a1-220-misty to gain extra Energy on one of our Pokemon, which we can later move with a1a-19-vaporeon to your Active Pokemon, ensuring you get to activate a high-cost attack to win the game.
The Wash Out ability lets you switch out a damaged ex Pokemon for a fresh, ready-to-fight new one. Giving it the Water Energy it needs to attack and keep the pressure going.
4- Leaf
a1a-68-leaf is a new Supporter card that plays similar to promo-2-x-speed but instead of reducing the cost of a Pokemon's retreat by 1, it reduces it by 2. This is especially strong in decks where the retreat cost of a Pokemon is 2 or more, but being a Supporter card means you have to be mindful of which turns you want to play it as it'll prevent you from playing other Supporter cards.
a1a-68-leaf made it into fourth place because it's perfect for many decks in Pokemon Pocket that struggle to retreat Pokemon and prevent opponents from getting easy Match Points. Retreating is a huge part of Pokemon Pocket, and Pokemon with 2+ retreat cost often are at a disadvantage as you'll find yourself more Energy reliant.
3- Mew Ex
a1a-32-mew-ex popularity relies on the meta and the opponent's Active Pokemon. The Genome Hacking attack copies 1 of the opponent's Active Pokemon's attacks and uses it as its own. This is great if your opponent has a high-damage attack Pokemon in play, allowing you to copy it with Genome Hacking, and giving the opponent a taste of their own medicine. Pokemon like a1-36-charizardex and a1-129-mewtwoex can get knocked out with their attacks.
The reason I ranked a1a-32-mew-ex in the third place is the cost of Genome Hacking, which requires 3 Colorless Energy to activate. This means a1a-32-mew-ex isn't tied to a specific Psychic deck. Instead, it can be experimented with in a variety of archetypes as an alternative win condition.
a1a-32-mew-ex is a Pokemon that can fit in a variety of different decks. As the meta develops and new cards are released, a1a-32-mew-ex might find itself in more decks, complementing their strategy and acting as a secondary win condition.
2- Celebi ex
The runner-up on my top 10 list is none other than a1a-3-celebi-ex, a popular Pokemon that crushed the Pocket meta early into the expansion. Although a1a-3-celebi-ex has low health, its Powerful Bloom attack can be devastating if you have a bit of luck on your side.
For each Energy attached to a1a-3-celebi-ex, Powerful Bloom lets you toss a coin. Each heads you get increases Powerful Bloom's attack damage by 50. So if you have 3 Energy attached, you can deal up to 150 damage if you get heads on all three Coins.
Obviously, the odds of getting 3 heads in a row are a bit low, so we want to have as much Energy as possible on a1a-3-celebi-ex to increase our chances of getting the damage output needed to knock out the opponent's Pokemon.
a1a-3-celebi-ex is a new Ex win condition that has the potential to be in the top tier, and combined with a supporter Pokemon like a1a-6-serperior, you can get more out of your Powerful Bloom attack to one-shot opponent's Pokemon.
1- Serperior
a1a-6-serperior takes first place in my list, thanks to its Jungle Totem ability carrying multiple Grass-type Pokemon. Although a1a-6-serperior isn't a win condition on its own, it's one of the best supporting Pokemon in the game, giving multiple Grass win conditions a faster strategy with Jungle Totem counting 1 Grass Energy as 2.
This has turned the a1a-3-celebi-ex into a monster, allowing it to go for more damage when it attacks and can benefit other Grass-type Pokemon that require a lot of Energy to activate their attacks.
a1a-6-serperior is also not tied to one Pokemon, and as we get more cards in the game, a1a-6-serperior will find more win conditions to support and will remain meta-relevant unless a stronger alternative is released for Grass-type decks. This expansion already has multiple Pokemon like a1a-9-dhelmise, a1a-2-exeggutor, and a1a-3-celebi-ex that rely on a1a-6-serperior as part of their strategy.
The only downside is that a1a-6-serperior is a Stage 2 Pokemon, so you'll need to find a1a-4-snivy and a1a-5-servine before getting a1a-6-serperior in play.
Closing Words
There are still multiple powerful new cards that I didn't mention in the list like a1a-59-pidgeot-ex and a1a-35-beheeyem that can have an impact on this meta or future ones! We'll see how the meta shapes up in the upcoming weeks as players continue to experiment with their decks.
