Omastar Control Deck Guide

Introduction

Welcome to my Omastar Control Deck Guide for Pokémon TCG Pocket! Centered around the a1-216-helix-fossil, a1-81-omanyte and a1-82-omastar evolution line this deck offers both consistent openings and an awesome late-game control strategy through a1-82-omastar that usually wins you the game on the spot playing against decks that relies on a single heavy hitter like a1-4-venusaurex, a1-36-charizardex, a1-129-mewtwoex, a1-195-wigglytuffex, a1-263-machampex, etc.

Core Cards

These are the core cards for the deck (best to have 2 copies of each in the deck):

• a1-216-helix-fossil
• a1-81-omanyte
• a1-82-omastar
• promo-2-x-speed or Pokémon with zero retreat costs like a1-75-starmie, a1-76-starmieex, or a1-200-dodrio (as a F2P option)
• a1-220-misty

One of the unique features of a1-82-omastar decks in general is that the a1-216-helix-fossil card, which evolves into a1-82-omastar eventually, counts as a basic Pokémon. This card cannot be fetched with a Poke Ball, nor can it be in your starting hand. You are guaranteed to start with the other Pokémon you choose to play alongside a1-82-omastar in your deck - a1-74-staryu, a1-199-doduo, a1-92-snom, etc.

Omastar Control Deck Guide

a1-82-omastar effectively shuts down decks that rely on single, heavy-hitting Pokémon. With its Ancient Whirlpool ability, a1-82-omastar prevents the opponent's active Pokémon from attacking, forcing them to spend extra energy retreating to the bench. This drains their resources, requiring energy reattachment on subsequent turns or leaving their Pokémon at the active spot only to be knocked out by a1-82-omastar relentless attacks.

Additionally, Pokémon with high retreat costs are especially disadvantaged against a fully set-up a1-82-omastar. However, decks with Pokémon that have low-energy attack requirements or minimal retreat costs can often bypass a1-82-omastar control strategy easily.

Playing Omastar with Starmie

With this deck, the strategy leans on using a1-74-staryu, the only standard basic Pokémon, which consistently starts the game (as explained earlier) and provides a strong opening move. Notably, a1-74-staryu evolutionary line includes two paths: the regular a1-75-starmie, a reliable hitter dealing 40 damage with one energy, and a1-76-starmieex, a powerful option that dishes out 90 damage with just two energy and includes a zero-cost retreat. I would always lean playing a1-75-starmie if available when I am going first and opt into using a1-76-starmieex when I am going second.

Playing with other F2P Friendly Pokémon

Being able to start early with either a1-200-dodrio or a1-93-frosmoth provides solid opening options for your game plan. a1-200-dodrio deals a reliable 40 damage with a moderate 80 HP, and its zero retreat cost allows you to switch it out freely, setting it up for a well-timed return as a finisher if your a1-82-omastar gets knocked out. a1-93-frosmoth, on the other hand, offers valuable control with its guaranteed sleep effect, which can stall opponents and set the stage for a1-82-omastar to take over.

Deck Weaknesses

• Decks that are able to knock out your starting basic Pokémon easily.
• I'm looking at you Pikachu ex deck!
• Failing coin flips via a1-220-misty or a1-93-frosmoth could sometimes lose you the game.
• Going against Pokemons that has cheap retreat costs makes a1-82-omastar control strategy a little underwhelming sometimes.

Closing

a1-82-omastar is underrated in some cases and having played this card myself for some time (aside from enjoying my Arbok deck like crazy). Personally, I believe this card will surely break the META that heavily relies on a sole Pokémon to win.
