Introduction
I begin my decks series write-ups for the Mythical Island expansion in Pokemon TCG Pocket with a Gyarados EX Deck Guide! This deck is awesome (I don't care what others say—this deck rocks). Overall, a1a-18-gyarados-ex ex may seem slow and underwhelming on its own, but when combined with a1-76-starmieex and a1a-19-vaporeon, it delivers results like in the videos below:
Gyarados EX Deck List
Flexible Swaps
- I believe you can cut one copy of a1a-68-leaf. Sometimes I find myself bricking 2 copies of this card when I needed something more useful.
- If you still want to keep 2 copies of a1a-68-leaf, you can cut out the promo-2-x-speed and swap it for a copy of promo-1-potion
- Adding a a1-270-giovanni would be a great option if you're running into many Mewtwo ex decks while playing versus mode
- If you're missing a copy of a1a-76-gyarados-ex you can still use a1-233-gyarados to have fun shifting your water energies here and there
- a1-75-starmie can be use since it has the same zero retreat cost like a1-76-starmieex, if you don't have it that is
Deck Guide
The core strategy of the deck centers on using a1a-19-vaporeon and a1a-76-gyarados-ex, leveraging Vaporeon's new ability in Mythical Island, "Wash Out" to manage water energy effectively from the bench to the Active Spot. Starmie ex is there to provide some early game pressure while you safely tuck-in your a1a-17-magikarp on the bench.
When your Starmie ex has done the work and has been damaged heavily, simply retreat it for zero energy cost to bring in a1a-76-gyarados-ex. From here, it's just transferring all water energy from the bench to a1a-76-gyarados-ex to deliver the final blows.
I believe a1a-76-gyarados-ex will climb high within the META until the next few expansions. Gyarados ex is a formidable attacker with its high damage output (140) and substantial HP (180) - able to survive all the other EX Pokémon's attack except for a1-253-charizardex and a1a-75-celebi-ex.
Closing
Thanks for reading my write-up for my Gyarados EX Deck Guide! This deck is ideal for players who enjoy aggressive water-type decks without relying on Misty as a core strategy. The combination of Vaporeon’s utility and Gyarados ex’s power creates a deck that balances aggression, adaptability, and energy efficiency, making it a standout in the Mythical Island expansion.
